Your core is the star of Pilates! Here’s how to activate it for maximum benefit:
1. Find Your Core:
- "Core" means your abs, lower back, hips, and pelvic floor.
- As you get into position, imagine zipping up your abs from pubic bone to navel.
2. The “Belly-to-Spine” Cue:
- Gently pull your navel in toward your spine with every exhale. Your stomach should flatten inward, not bulge outward.
3. Check With a Breath:
- Inhale to let your abs relax a bit, then exhale and engage (“hug in”) as you move.
4. Don’t Grip or Strain:
- Engagement is gentle and steady, not a harsh squeeze.
5. Practice, Practice, Practice:
- Try holding your core during simple activities (standing, brushing teeth)—it’ll get easier the more you do it!
