Breath is the heart of Pilates—helping you move with intention, maintain core engagement, and find your zen. Here’s how to breathe “like a Pilates pro”:
The Pilates Breath: Lateral (Ribcage) Breathing
- Inhale through your nose, expanding your ribcage out to the sides. Imagine your lungs growing wider, not your belly puffing up.
- Exhale through pursed lips as if blowing through a straw, gently drawing your belly button toward your spine.
- Try breathing this way while lying down with hands on your ribs—you’ll feel them move out as you breathe in!
Why it Matters:
Proper breathing increases oxygen flow, stabilizes the core, and deepens the mind-body connection.
Practice tip: Sync your breath to movement—inhale to prepare, exhale during the effort (such as curling up, lifting, or twisting).
